ownCloud is a self-hosted file sync and share platform that was one of the pioneers of open-source cloud storage. It was founded by Frank Karlitschek and has evolved through two major product lines: ownCloud 10 (PHP-based) and ownCloud Infinite Scale (Go-based).
2010 – ownCloud Founded
Frank Karlitschek founded ownCloud with the vision of creating an open-source alternative to proprietary cloud storage services.
2012 – ownCloud 3 with Enterprise Edition
The first Enterprise Edition was released, offering commercial support and additional features for businesses.
2014 – ownCloud 6 with Improved Sharing

Frank Karlitschek left ownCloud and founded Nextcloud, taking several developers with him.

2019 – ownCloud Infinite Scale (ocis) Announced
A complete rewrite of ownCloud in Go was announced, promising better performance and scalability.
2021 – ownCloud Infinite Scale 2.0
The first stable release of the Go-based ownCloud Infinite Scale.
2025 – ownCloud Infinite Scale 8.0
Major release with enhanced features and improved performance.
2026 – Current Version
ownCloud 10.16.1 (PHP) and Infinite Scale 8.0.0 (Go) are the current versions.
