Isso was created by Martin Zimmermann as a free, self-hosted alternative to Disqus. The name “Isso” comes from the German phrase “Ich schrei sonst” (roughly “or else I’ll scream”), reflecting the frustration many developers felt with existing commenting solutions that tracked users and injected ads.
Isso was designed with simplicity in mind. The Python backend can run on minimal resources, and the SQLite database option means no external database server is required. The JavaScript embed is intentionally minimal, loading quickly without blocking page rendering.
Isso found a niche among privacy-conscious bloggers and static site users. Its Disqus-like interface made it familiar to users, while the self-hosted nature appealed to site owners concerned about privacy and data ownership. The project gained particular traction in the European privacy-focused community.
Isso continues to be maintained with active development on GitHub. The project has seen renewed interest as users seek alternatives to third-party commenting services. Docker images and improved documentation have made deployment more accessible.
