Zabbix was created by Alexei Vladishev in 2001 as a network monitoring solution. The project began in Kazakhstan and has grown into one of the most widely used open-source monitoring platforms worldwide. The name “Zabbix” is derived from “Z” (representing the final solution) and “abbix” (suggesting flexibility and adaptability).
Alexei Vladishev, a system administrator from Kazakhstan, started developing Zabbix in 2001 to solve a practical problem: monitoring the growing IT infrastructure at his company. Existing solutions were either:
- Too expensive: Commercial monitoring tools had high licensing costs
- Too complex: Required significant expertise to deploy and maintain
- Too limited: Lacked features needed for modern infrastructure
The initial version was written in C and focused on:
- Network device monitoring via SNMP
- Basic server monitoring
- Simple alerting capabilities
- Web-based interface
Zabbix 1.0 was released in 2004 under the GPL license. The initial release featured:
- Agent-based and agentless monitoring
- SNMP support for network devices
- Web-based configuration interface
- Email alerting
- Basic graphing capabilities
The project quickly gained popularity in Eastern Europe and Russia before spreading globally.
