Healthchecks was created in 2015 by Cephalon as an open-source cron job monitoring solution. The project was designed to solve the common problem of silent cron job failures by providing a simple “heartbeat” monitoring service. The name “Healthchecks” reflects its purpose: checking the health of scheduled tasks.
Healthchecks was created in 2015. The motivation came from:
- Silent Failures: Cron jobs failing without notification
- No Visibility: No easy way to know if jobs ran
- Complex Solutions: Existing monitoring was too complex
- Need Simplicity: Simple heartbeat monitoring
Initial Design Goals:
- Simple heartbeat API
- Web dashboard
- Email alerts
- Self-hostable
- Open-source
Healthchecks was first released in 2015 as an open-source project under the BSD license. The initial release featured:
- Heartbeat monitoring
- Web dashboard
- Email notifications
- Django-based backend
- Self-hosting support
The tool quickly gained popularity among system administrators and developers.
