Apache Mesos originated from research at UC Berkeley and became one of the earliest large-scale cluster resource managers. Its “distributed systems kernel” design influenced how operators thought about abstracting CPU and memory across many hosts.
Mesos gained adoption alongside frameworks such as Marathon, Aurora, and Chronos, and was used in several early large-scale container and mixed-workload platforms.
As Kubernetes became the dominant orchestration layer, Mesos ecosystem momentum declined. In 2025, the project moved to the Apache Attic, marking retirement from active development.
